PEOPLE WHO MAY BE ABLE TO HELP WITH FAMILY DIFFICULTIES

  • Cumberland Ellis Family Law Department When there are family difficulties, solicitors are often the first port of call. All the members of our Family Law Department are experienced in dealing not only with the legal issues but also the practical and emotional issues that may arise following family difficulties. In many situations the team will be able to negotiate and resolve difficulties without the court being involved. Sometimes it will be necessary to involve the court to a greater or lesser degree. We are members of “Resolution” (formerly Solicitors Family Law Association).

  • Collaborative Lawyers provide legal advice and sign an agreement to resolve matters in ‘round table’ meetings instead of going to Court. If agreement is not possible, then you or your partner/spouse can ask the Court to decide, but you must then use different lawyers. There are currently two trained Collaborative Lawyers in our Family Department: Hazel Wright (Partner & Head of Department) and Conrad Adam (Partner).

  • Mediators act neutrally to assist couples to resolve conflict between themselves. Mediators cannot give legal advice and therefore it is sensible for you to also consult an independent solicitor. Hazel Wright has nearly 30 years experience in family law, and is an accredited mediator.

Counsellors and helplines

For many people managing the stress of family problems can be very debilitating, it can have an effect on the whole family, particularly children. Research shows that the best outcome for children is when parents manage not to make the child the go-between and are able to work together as parents, even though they are no longer a couple. Often this is difficult for parents, who may be going through emotional turmoil themselves. The professionals and organisations listed below may be able to help you and your family.
